Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology
An exquisite fossil and mineral collection from around the world.
The Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology is an exquisite collection of fossils and minerals from around the world. The museum is located inside the San Juan College School of Energy and is open to the public.
Sherman E. Dugan was a lifelong resident of Farmington and a passionate collector of rocks, minerals, and fossils. This passion led him to accumulate one of the largest private collections in the Southwest. Following his passing in December 2013, the Tom Dugan (Sherman’s father) family donated a large portion of his museum-quality fossil and mineral collection to the San Juan College Foundation. Sherman had an eye for the unusual, which is reflected in this cherished collection that honors his memory at the Dugan Museum.
The Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology is the most comprehensive collection of minerals and fossils in the Four Corners region. It continues to grow because of generous donations to the Friends of Sherman Dugan under the San Juan College Foundation. Inside the museum are showcases of beautiful and rare minerals and fossils from around the world, including Mexico, Canada, and Africa. One of the newest exhibits at the museum highlights prehistoric animals from the San Juan Basin area. The must-see exhibit includes fossils of the albertosaurus sarcophagus, agujaceratops, nyctosaurus gracilis, didelphodon vorax, bambiraptor feinbergi, and anhanguera.
"We are proud to house this museum-quality collection. San Juan College and the community are better places to live and learn, thanks to the generosity of the Tom Dugan family."
